I very much enjoy listening to speeches. Especially motivational speeches. If you have some time on your hands, go to youtube and search motivational speeches. Your time will not be wasted.
The thing that makes a good motivational speech is passion. Passion for the topic, passion for those the speech is given, passion. Sometimes I am saddened by my lack of passion. All too often I am even keeled. My emotions are pretty steady. I guess this is probably due to my Scandinavian upbringing. I really do want more passion in my life.
I want to share a video of a speech given by Jim Valvano. Valvano was the head basketball coach for North Carolina State University. In this video, Valvano is receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 1993 ESPY’s. He is also dying of cancer. You can hear his passion as he shares about life.
Valvano shares about the importance of three things that he believes people should do every day. 1. Laugh. 2. Think and 3. Have your emotions moved to tears (happiness or joy). Pretty good advice.
Check out the video if you have time. It’s about 11 minutes, but well worth it.
